Tennis nets are 42 inches high at the posts and 36 inches tall in the middle.
In the middle of the net, it rises to 34 inches high, while the height at the posts is 36 inches. Nets sag in the center of the net, which is adjustable through a center strap, as they do in all sports using nets. Differences Between Pickleball and Tennis Nets Width
For both sports, the net size is most significantly different when it comes to their width. From sideline to sideline, the net must be the same width. In doubles matches, tennis nets are 42 feet wide and in singles matches, they are 33 feet wide, due to the wider size of a tennis court.
Both singles and doubles matches are played on a net 21 feet, 9 inches wide.
Similarities Between Pickleball and Tennis Nets
Tennis and pickleball nets have many similarities:
- The height of both is maintained by straps in the middle.
- The nets are hung and stretched on supporting posts in both cases.
- Keeping balls out of the nets requires woven mesh materials.
- As with pickleball, tennis singles courts have two sets of supporting posts, each 3 inches in diameter.
- Their tops are covered with 2″ white tape and have a metal cable running through them.
Differences Between Pickleball and Tennis Nets
Tennis nets and pickleball nets differ in the following ways:
- The difference in weight of the balls requires a stronger tennis net
- Tennis nets are 2″ longer in the middle than pickleball nets
- There are 6″ fewer posts on pickleball nets
- Pickleball nets are twice as wide as tennis nets
- Matches in singles require additional supporting posts

Can You Use a Tennis Net for Pickleball?
Pickleball nets can be made using tennis nets as long as a few adjustments are made. In most parks and public spaces, roll-away nets are installed instead of permanent nets, even if tennis courts are not converted to pickleball dimensions.
By adjusting the center strap, a tennis net can be used for pickleball. It is also possible to lower some nets by notching the side posts. Make sure the net posts are 36 inches high and 34 inches high in the center.
In order to avoid adjusting the net height, you may want to consider purchasing a portable pickleball net which is the official USA Pickleball. Using chalk and a measuring tape, you can easily set up a pickleball court on any flat surface using portable nets.
How did this stuff get decided?
Joel Pritchard was one of the pickleball founders in 1965, and he was known to raise the net to his (36-inch) waist height before play began. It was originally planned to play on a badminton court – but due to the net height being too high for their game, they chose to play on a “waist-high” net.

How Does Height Affect Performance in Different Sports?
Balls travel at different speeds depending on their trajectory. In pickleball, since the nets are lower than those in tennis, the ball is more likely to be hit harder and in a straighter line. However, it isn’t true, since there are many factors to consider.

Pickleball balls are lighter than tennis balls, so they can’t be hit as hard with pickleball paddles or travel as far as tennis balls, so a lower net is required.
